Giles Farrington

Giles Farrington is a Lecturer at York St John University’s School of Science, Technology and Health. With over 30 years of experience as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), he previously held roles at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including Lead ODP for Critical Care. He holds an MSc in Health Professions Education from Hull York Medical School, supporting his teaching in advanced life support and instructor training. His research focuses on critical care adaptation post-pandemic, workforce transformation, and ODP roles in high-acuity environments.

Professional highlights include co-creating the NHS Allied Health Professions Critical Care Capability Framework and contributing to national ODP workforce strategies with Health Education England. He is the first ODP to join the Intensive Care Society’s Allied Health Professions Professional Advisory Group and a Fellow of both the Higher Education Academy and the College of Operating Department Practitioners.

His publications include a critical care clinical reference book and reports on ODP workforce development, while his conference contributions address frameworks for critical care competency and role evolution in healthcare systems.
