Gilbert DAVID

Gilbert DAVID is an Associate Professor at the University of Montréal's Department of French Language Literatures, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He holds an honorary title of Honorary Professor. His research focuses on Quebec and European theatre, emphasizing 20th-century dramaturgy, socio-aesthetic analysis, and theatrical discourse. He has supervised over a dozen master’s theses, exploring topics like solo performances, Quebec women’s theatre, and intercultural language dynamics in drama.

DAVID has led major research initiatives, including the Régimes socio-esthétiques du théâtre au Québec (1945-2015) project (2014–2018) and the Socio-esthétique des pratiques théâtrales du Québec contemporain team (2012–2014). He also directed the Rappels documentation project (2005–2011), cataloging Quebec theatre productions. His work integrates semiotics, socio-cultural analysis, and historical studies of theatrical practices.

He has authored/co-authored key publications like Le corps déjoué (2009) and contributed to encyclopedic theatre dictionaries. His research bridges academic analysis with contemporary performance trends, emphasizing Quebec’s cultural uniqueness within global theatre contexts.
