Dr. Gil Hizi is a Research Associate and Lecturer in Social and Cultural Anthropology at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt/Main, affiliated with the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. He also held Post-Doctoral positions at the University of Cologne's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and the Global South Studies Center. His research focuses on self-improvement practices, transnational psychological interventions, and their moral and emotional impacts in contemporary China. Current research explores psychological discourses in ethno-national projects and 'village NBA' sports festivals as sites of cultural and economic transformation.
Research interests include affect theory, phenomenology, sport studies, and post-socialist transformations. He teaches courses on contemporary China, anthropological theory, and research methodologies. Office hours are Tuesdays 16:00-18:00 and Wednesdays 11:30-12:30 in IG 0552.
His work interrogates how psychological techniques shape moral frameworks in market societies, examining topics like 'village sports' as intersections of heritage, commercialization, and governance. Publications span journals like American Ethnologist, China Perspectives, and Emotions and Society.
