Gideon Basson

Gideon Basson is a Research Fellow at the Department of Public Law, Stellenbosch University, and a DPhil candidate in Law at the University of Oxford, supervised by Professor Shreya Atrey. His current research focuses on 'fortune' as a prohibited ground of discrimination under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. He holds a BA, LLB, and an LLM (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University.

Research interests include critical legal theory, legal philosophy, constitutional law, and international human rights law, with emphasis on discrimination law. He contributes to the Maastricht Principles (IV) on the Human Rights of Future Generations as an expert drafter.

Awards include the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship (2020) and the Shaun Johnson Memorial Scholarship. At Oxford, he convenes the Bonavero Graduate Research Forum.
