About
Giampiero Moretti is a Full Professor of Aesthetics at the Department of Literary, Linguistic and Comparative Studies, Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, University of Naples "L'Orientale". He has been with the university since 1996, initially as Associate Professor of Aesthetics and promoted to Full Professor around 2000. He previously taught at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro" (1992-1996) and held teaching positions at the Deutsche Schule in Rome (1985-1992).
Moretti earned his degrees in Law (Philosophy of Law, 1977) and Philosophy (Moral Philosophy, 1980) from the University of Rome "La Sapienza". His academic journey includes significant research periods at German universities, including the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (1981-83, 1987, 1994) and the University of Bochum (1995-96) under an A. von Humboldt Foundation fellowship. He has served in various institutional roles, including as Director of the Department of Human and Social Sciences (2016-2019) and as a member of the Commission for the revision of the University Statute.
Moretti's research focuses on aesthetics, comparative literature, German Romanticism, and the history of ideas. His work centers on the relationship between aesthetics and comparative studies, with particular emphasis on German philosophy and literature. He has conducted extensive research on Heidelberg Romanticism, translating works by Friedrich Creuzer, Josef Görres, the Brothers Grimm, and Johann J. Bachofen. His book "Heidelberg romantica. Romanticismo tedesco e nihilismo europeo" won the National Prize of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage – Accademia dei Lincei in 1985. More recently, he has focused on Goethezeit, Nietzsche, Klages, Hölderlin, and Stanislaw Lem's "Solaris".
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent engagement with German philosophical traditions, particularly examining concepts of Eros, Sexus, imagination, and matter across various literary and philosophical contexts. He has edited significant works including Wellek and Warren's "Theory of Literature" and Hermann August Korff's "Lo spirito dell'età di Goethe".
Among his scientific awards are the National Prize of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage – Accademia dei Lincei (1985) and the Diploma of Corresponding Member for the class of "Moral and Political Sciences" from the "Società di Scienze Lettere e Arti" of Naples (2024). He has also coordinated research projects including the PRIN-Cofin unit on "Philosophical Paradigms of Musical Aesthetics" (2005) and the University Research Project "Pseudos. Declinations of dis/value between testimony and falsification" (2022-2024).
Moretti serves on various editorial boards including "Studi di Estetica," "Studi filosofici," and "Ágalma," and collaborates with RAI radio and television programs. He is currently editing the "Estetica" series at Franco Angeli with Giancarlo Lacchin and teaching Comparative Literature courses for the 2024-2025 academic year.
