Giacomo Messina

Giacomo Messina is a Research Fellow at Aalborg University's Department of Chemistry and Bioscience (Faculty of Engineering and Science). His work focuses on wastewater treatment, biological treatment systems, and sustainable materials innovation. He specializes in optimizing wastewater infrastructure, constructed wetland designs, and repurposing industrial waste into functional materials.

Research interests include:

• Bioreactor optimization for municipal wastewater systems
• Wastewater-to-irrigation solutions using natural filtration systems
• Recycling dental zirconia waste into ceramic membranes for oil-water separation

He contributed to the Baltic Sea Region's nutrient reduction project (2022-2025), addressing wastewater challenges in coastal tourist areas. His technical reports emphasize scalable biological treatment systems and adaptive infrastructure solutions.

Collaborative work includes presenting at the DHRTC Technology Conference (2021) and co-developing oil-water separation membrane technologies through dental waste upcycling.
