Gerwin van Schie

Gerwin van Schie is an Assistant Professor in New Media and Digital Culture at the Department of Media and Culture Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Utrecht University. His work critically examines the intersections of datafication, race/ethnicity, and governance in digital societies.

Van Schie's research focuses on how societal institutions datafy immigrant populations, exposing biases in systems like CBS statistics. He employs postcolonial and critical data studies frameworks to analyze algorithmic governance, digital colonialism, and green metaphors in technology. His recent work explores the "greenwashing" of digital colonialism in blockchain-based forest conservation.

Key research outputs include studies on racialization in data systems, the role of "roots" and "clay" metaphors in Dutch governance, and historical discourse networks. His scholarship contributes to debates on open societies, sustainable development, and institutional ethics.

Van Schie actively engages in academic events, including co-organizing the 2024 Symposium on Measuring Racial Representation in Dutch Universities. He collaborates with blockchain researcher Inte Gloerich and participates in the Utrecht Data School.
