Gerrit Lohmann

Gerrit Lohmann is a Professor for Physics of the Climate System at the University of Bremen, working in cooperation with the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven where he heads the "Paleoclimate Dynamics" section since 2005.

Education:

• Studied physics and mathematics at Universities Göttingen and Marburg
• Received diploma in physics in 1992
• Obtained Ph.D. in physics in Bremen in 1995/1996

Research Interests:

Lohmann's research focuses on understanding past climate changes to better contextualize current and future climate variations through Earth system modeling, paleoclimate dynamics, and theoretical aspects of Earth system analysis. He specializes in model-data comparisons (using out-of-sample evaluation and emergent constraints), dynamical interpretation of paleoclimate data from sources like corals, ice cores, and marine sediments, and examining the role of global ocean circulation in climate variability. His work helps quantify natural climate variability and identify mechanisms under various forcings, with the guiding principle that "looking at the past sharpens our understanding of possible future climate changes".

Professional Activities:

Lohmann has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications in international journals. He was the initiator and speaker of the Earth System Science Research School (ESSReS) at the University of Bremen, Jacobs University Bremen, and AWI Bremerhaven. He has participated in numerous national and international projects with several research stays, conference contributions, and teaching at summer/winter schools.
