Gerhard Thiel

Gerhard Thiel is a Professor of Botany at the Faculty of Biology, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, since 2005. He previously held a C2 Professorship at the same institution from 2000 to 2005 and served as a Group Leader in Plant Physiology at the University of Göttingen (1995-2000). His career includes postdoctoral work at the University of Göttingen (1991-1995) and the University of Cambridge, UK (1989-1991).

Thiel’s research spans cellular biophysics, ion channel structure-function analysis, viral ion channels, exo-endocytosis in plant cells, and protein engineering. His work integrates plant physiology with molecular and cellular mechanisms.

He has held significant administrative roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Biology at TU Darmstadt (2006-2008, 2012-2014) and Co-Speaker of the Graduate College 1675 on “Molecular and cellular responses to ionizing irradiation” (2011-2014). He is also an Editorial Board Member for Plant Physiology, Plant Biology, and Scientific Reports.
