About
Professor Gerd Kempermann is a leading neuroscience researcher affiliated with the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Dresden. His primary appointment involves investigating neural regeneration mechanisms, with joint affiliations at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) and the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering.
His research program examines fundamental neurobiological processes including:
- Regulation of neural stem cell proliferation/differentiation in adult brains
- Genetic determinants of hippocampal neurogenesis
- Cdk5 signaling pathways in neural development
- Metabolic-behavioral interactions in neural regeneration
He has directed significant DFG-funded initiatives including Priority Programs on adult neurogenesis and Research Grants exploring genetic-metabolic interactions. As sub-project leader in Collaborative Research Centers, he investigated activity-dependent molecular controls of hippocampal neurogenesis progression.
Kempermann contributes to graduate education through DFG Research Training Groups focused on neuroimaging applications (GRK 238), neuropsychiatry of aging (GRK 429), and the international biomedicine graduate school (GSC 97).
