About
Gerasimos Chourdakis is a Researcher at the Institute of Parallel and Distributed Systems (IPVS), University of Stuttgart, focusing on the Usability and Sustainability of Simulation Software. Previously, he was a Research Associate at the Chair of Scientific Computing in Computer Science (SCCS) at Technical University of Munich (TUM) from 2018 to 2024. He holds an M.Sc. in Computational Science and Engineering from TUM (2017) and a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (2014).
His research interests center on multi-physics coupling, geometric multi-scale modeling, fluid-structure interaction (FSI), and software engineering practices for sustainable research software ecosystems. He is a co-developer of the open-source preCICE library, which facilitates multi-physics simulations, and has contributed to projects like preDOM and ATHLET-preCICE. He emphasizes software sustainability, testing, and community-driven development.
Chourdakis has supervised numerous student projects and thesis works, including contributions to preCICE’s OpenFOAM adapter, geometric multiscale coupling, and thermal-electrochemical systems. He has taught courses such as Advanced Programming and CSE Primer at TUM, redesigning curricula to integrate research software engineering (RSE) skills. He actively organizes workshops, conferences, and RSE initiatives, including the OpenFOAM Special Interest Group and the de-RSE Chapter Munich. His work bridges academic research with practical software development, fostering collaboration and sustainability in simulation tools.
Chourdakis’ contributions to the preCICE ecosystem include system regression tests, documentation automation, and community engagement. He advocates for software sustainability through practices like continuous integration and testing frameworks, ensuring the library remains robust and user-friendly. His interdisciplinary approach integrates computational science with software engineering to advance multi-physics simulation methodologies.
