Professor · Low Temperature Plasma Physics
Eindhoven University of TechnologyAbout
Gerard van Rooij is Full Professor and Chair of Sustainable Plasma Chemistry in the Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He serves as Senior Scientist and heads the Nonequilibrium Fuel Conversion group at DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research). His research focuses on low-temperature plasma physics and chemistry, particularly CO2 activation using plasma for solar fuel production.
Academic background includes a PhD in Physics from the University of Amsterdam and an MSc in Physics from TU/e. He holds visiting positions at the Key Laboratory for Super Conductivity and New Energy Research in Chengdu, China.
Research expertise covers:
- Plasma-based fuel conversion
- Plasma-surface interaction studies
- Building physical measurements and simulation
- Development of high-field MRI systems
- MR-detectable smart probes for neural signaling
Publications demonstrate advances in plasma reactor design, CO2 conversion efficiency, and plasma-catalyst interactions. Recent work investigates methane reforming and microwave discharge phenomena. Research contributes to sustainable energy solutions through fundamental studies of plasma processes.
Professor van Rooij has consulted on environmental control systems for cultural heritage sites including the Anne Frank House and Rembrandt House. He serves on advisory boards for multiple European research centers focused on neuroscience and brain imaging.
