About
Gerald M Schneeweiss is an Associate Professor at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research within the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna, Austria. He has held this position since 2015, following an Assistant Professor (tenure track) role at the same institution from 2010-2015. His academic career includes significant research positions at the Institute of Systematic Botany and Mycology in Munich and the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology in the Czech Republic.
His research focuses on plant systematics, evolutionary biology, and alpine plant biogeography, with particular expertise in phylogeography, polyploidy and cytotype differentiation, endemism in mountain regions, parasitic plants (especially Orobanchaceae), and Campanulaceae systematics. His work often centers on high mountain ecosystems across Europe and Southwest Asia, particularly in the Alps and the Irano-Anatolian biodiversity hotspot.
Analysis of his most recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on species delimitation in alpine plants, molecular phylogenetics in parasitic plant groups, conservation priorities in biodiversity hotspots, and the evolutionary consequences of polyploidy. His work frequently combines morphological, cytological, and molecular approaches to address fundamental questions in plant evolution and biogeography.
Dr. Schneeweiss serves as Associate Editor for Alpine Botany and for the Plant Systematics and Evolution section of Frontiers in Plant Sciences, and as Chief Editor for Neilreichia. He also reviews for over 30 scientific journals and international grant agencies.
His research has been supported by multiple grants including an ongoing FWF project on Evolution in high mountain systems (Phyteuma, Campanulaceae; €347K), Areas of endemism in the high-mountain flora of Iran (FWF; €170K), and several previous projects totaling over €1 million in research funding. He has supervised numerous students and collaborators, with research spanning Europe, Iran, and other mountain regions worldwide.
His laboratory and research group focus on evolutionary processes in high mountain plants, with particular attention to speciation mechanisms, adaptation to extreme environments, and the impacts of climate change on alpine biodiversity.
