About
Gerald Call, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Midwestern University with joint appointments across five colleges: Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Graduate Studies - Arizona, College of Health Sciences-Glendale, and College of Dental Medicine-Arizona. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas Medical Center (2001), an M.S. and B.S. from Brigham Young University (1996, 1994), and completed postdoctoral training at UCLA and Stowers Institute for Medical Research.
His research focuses on microbiome interactions in Parkinson's disease using Drosophila melanogaster models, with specific interests in:
- Identifying probiotics that ameliorate motor dysfunction
- Characterizing bacterial strains from Parkinson's model flies
- Investigating nicotine's neuroprotective effects
- Studying transcriptional regulation in development
Publication analysis reveals three primary domains: Endocrine Pharmacology (hormonal disorders, bone/thyroid/adrenal therapeutics), Neurodegenerative Mechanisms (Parkinson's models, mitochondrial dysfunction), and Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis (probiotics, bacterial genomics). Recent book chapters systematize pharmacological treatments while experimental work advances Drosophila disease models.
Grant support includes the Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium-funded project: "Identifying Probiotics and the Bacterial Genes that Ameliorate Motor Dysfunction in a Drosophila Parkinson's Disease Model" (2022-2023).
With 18+ years teaching experience, he instructs pharmacology courses across multiple health programs specializing in: endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, and autonomic nervous system pharmacology. Current courses include Pharmacology I-III and advanced pharmacotherapeutics.
