George Porter is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, and is affiliated with Seventh College. He serves as Co-Director of the Center for Networked Systems (CNS) and is a co-founder of inFocus Networks. Professor Porter holds leadership roles including Board Member of USENIX, TPC Co-Chair for ACM SIGCOMM 2025, and member of the USENIX NSDI Steering Committee.
His research builds networks enabling high-performance, scalable, and sustainable computer systems. Primary interests include:
- Computer networks and distributed systems
- High-performance and parallel computing
- Sustainable computing and datacenter decarbonization
- Network architectures and circuit-switching technologies
He has received significant scientific recognition including:
- Google Focused Research Award
- NetApp Faculty Fellowship
- NSF CAREER Award
Professor Porter advises two current Ph.D. students and has supervised over 20 graduate students on projects spanning distributed systems, network optimization, and sustainable computing. He maintains active industry collaborations through grants and recently accepted a position at Amazon AWS.
He leads the Center for Networked Systems (cns.ucsd.edu), focusing on systems research, and is part of the Systems and Networking research group at UCSD.
