George Kenanakis

Dr. George Kenanakis is a Principal Researcher at IESL-FORTH since 2006, with expertise spanning metamaterials, electromagnetic wave propagation, and 3D printing. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry (2011) from the University of Crete and a B.Eng./M.Sc.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003). His research integrates applied physics, materials science, and environmental engineering to address challenges in energy harvesting, photocatalysis, and pollution control. Key interests include metamaterial-based energy systems, 3D printed nanostructures, and advanced composites for construction and electronics.

Notable achievements include DESCARTES Prize-winning contributions to metamaterial research and publications on topics like microplastic migration in food, solar cell optimization, and microwave energy harvesting. He has been an Associated Researcher at the Center of Materials Science and Photonics (HMU) since 2006 and previously held roles as a Lecturer (HMU, 2006–2015) and registered chemical engineer in Greece. Awards include journal cover features (ACS Photonics, Materials Today) and certifications in environmental management systems auditing.

His work bridges fundamental research and industrial applications, with projects focusing on smart building materials, pollution sensors, and sustainable energy solutions. Ongoing efforts include developing 3D-printed circuits, self-cleaning photocatalytic filters, and thermoelectric devices for energy recovery.
