About
Dr George Gazis is an Associate Professor in Greek Literature and Philosophy at Durham University’s Department of Classics and Ancient History. His research bridges Archaic Greek epic and lyric poetry, Platonic thought, Athenian drama, and Mycenaean socio-economic systems via Linear B records. He explores themes like mortality, afterlife narratives, and intertextuality in works like Homer’s Odyssey and Pindar’s odes.
Key publications include his monograph Homer and the Poetics of Hades (2018) and edited volumes on death studies and Homeric traditions. Current projects involve editing Euripides’ pseudo-epigraphic letters and analyzing tragic spectacles’ cognitive impact on early Athenian audiences.
Research interests span Bronze Age Aegean material culture, Near Eastern epic influences, and the intersection of performance studies with ancient literature. His work critically engages with oral tradition, mythological topography, and ancient cosmogonies.
