Dr. George G. Zhanel is a Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. As Research Director of the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Alliance (CARA), his work focuses on antimicrobial resistance, diagnostics, and treatment strategies. He has published over 1,200 papers and presented globally on infectious diseases.
Education: PhD in Medical Microbiology (University of Manitoba, 1994), Doctor of Clinical Pharmacy (University of Minnesota, 1986), BSc in Pharmacy (University of Manitoba, 1984).
Research Interests include mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, rapid diagnostics, novel antimicrobial discovery (with patents), and the impact of vaccines on resistance. His work spans community- and healthcare-associated infections, including MRSA, VRE, and multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales.
Key Achievements: Over 1,250 invited lectures worldwide, developer of the CARA website, and recipient of prestigious teaching awards. His research is supported by collaborations with the National Microbiology Laboratory and Public Health Agency of Canada.
