George Fytas

George Fytas is Professor of Physical Chemistry in the Department of Materials Science & Technology at the University of Crete, with additional affiliations as an affiliated member of IESL/FORTH and External Member of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz.

His academic foundation includes a BS in Chemistry from the University of Athens, PhD from Technical University of Hannover (Germany), postdoctoral research at SUNY Stony Brook (USA), and habilitation from the University of Bielefeld (Germany).

His research centers on structured soft materials with spatiotemporal complexity, employing spontaneous Brillouin Light Spectroscopy and stimulated hypersound techniques to investigate elastic wave propagation in polymer-colloid systems (phononics), thermomechanical anisotropy, and photon-phonon coupling. This work bridges polymer physics, colloid science, and materials engineering to decode unconventional physical properties.

Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a consistent focus on mechanical property characterization across diverse soft matter systems—from colloidal crystals to organic nanoparticles—using advanced spectroscopic methods to correlate nanoscale structure with macroscopic behavior.
