About
George Chiu is a Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, with courtesy appointments in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Psychological Sciences. He also serves as Assistant Dean for Global Engineering Programs and Partnerships. His research focuses on mechatronics, dynamical systems control, and functional printing, with applications in robotics, sensor technology, and biomedical engineering. He previously served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF), managing the Control Systems Program and the National Robotics Initiative. Chiu is a Fellow of ASME and IS&T and has led initiatives like the Purdue FIRST Programs to mentor K-12 students in robotics.
Education: PhD (1994) and MS (1990) from University of California, Berkeley; BS (1985) from National Taiwan University. He teaches courses in systems, measurements, and control (SMAC) areas and has authored numerous publications in journals like ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems and IEEE Sensors Journal.
Research projects include developing surface-functionalized printing technologies for food safety sensors, variable stiffness actuators for human-robot interaction, and sustainable precision agriculture systems. He has received grants from USDA, NSF, and industry partners like HP and the Army Research Office.
Awards include Fellowships from ASME and IS&T, and editorial roles at IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics and Journal of Imaging Science and Technology. His lab focuses on application-driven solutions with interdisciplinary collaborations in engineering, biology, and materials science.
