George Aaron Broadwell

George Aaron Broadwell is the Elling Eide Professor of Anthropology and Jesse Ball duPont Magid Term Professor at the University of Florida. He holds dual affiliations with the Departments of Anthropology and Linguistics within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language documentation, and historical linguistics, with specialization in Native American languages including Timucua, Choctaw, Zapotec, and Copala Triqui. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCLA in 1990, following a B.A. from Harvard University.

His work emphasizes endangered language preservation through collaborative projects like Ticha, an online resource for Colonial Zapotec texts, and the Mississippi Choctaw Dictionary. Broadwell has authored multiple monographs, including 'The Timucua Language' (2024) and 'A Choctaw Reference Grammar' (2006). He directs interdisciplinary initiatives such as CoLang 2018, promoting language documentation methods.

Recent research explores Timucua's syntactic structures, historical changes in Zapotec verb systems, and colonial-era language use. He co-curates the Hebuano Timucua resource project and has received the Victor Golla Prize for lifetime contributions to indigenous language scholarship. His grants include NEH support for Choctaw dialect documentation and IARPA funding for computational metaphor analysis.
