George A Wharton is an Associate Professor (Education) of Health Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Department of Health Policy. He holds a BSc in International Relations from LSE and an MSc in Health Policy from Imperial College London. His work focuses on comparative international health policy, with expertise in international health systems and financing, health diplomacy, NHS policy and management, and international partnerships.
Before academia, George worked in investment banking and the UK Civil Service, later serving as COO of Healthcare UK and Head of International Business Development at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. At LSE since 2018, he leads the Executive MSc in Health Economics, Policy and Management, and teaches courses on financing health care and health system performance. He is actively involved in research and advisory partnerships, such as the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR).
George has contributed to publications in high-impact journals like the BMJ and The Lancet, and serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Healthcare Management. He is also a Board Trustee of the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre, supporting advanced radiology services in the NHS.
