Georg Wurzer

Georg Wurzer is an academic staff member at the Institute for Eastern European History and Landeskunde, affiliated with the Department of History under the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tübingen. Since September 2024, he has focused on the historical and cultural implications of the Soviet-Afghan War, the concept of PTSD, and the experiences of prisoners of war in Russia during World War I.

• Education: Magister Artium in Osteuropäische Geschichte (Eastern European History), Politik (Political Science), Soziologie (Sociology), and Ostslawische Philologie (East Slavic Philology) from the University of Tübingen (1990).
• Doctorate: PhD in History from the University of Tübingen (2000), analyzing the experiences of Central Powers' prisoners of war in Russia during World War I.

His research interests span Soviet-Afghan War, PTSD in historical contexts, the NS-writer Edwin Erich Dwinger, and World War I captivity. Recent articles highlight his work on PTSD's diffusion to Russia, Ukraine, and Lithuania, alongside analyses of wartime trauma and ideological narratives in post-war German literature.

Georg Wurzer has contributed to edited volumes on topics such as humanitarian aid during World War I and the experiences of prisoners of war. His 2005 monograph on WWI prisoners in Russia remains a significant publication. He previously served as a guest lecturer at the Russian Humanities University in Moscow (2006) and worked as a court-certified translator for Russian from 2018–2024.
