Georg Schomerus is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Leipzig Medical Center. He holds a medical degree and has held academic positions including Assistant Professor at the University of Greifswald and Visiting Researcher at King’s College London. His research focuses on mental health literacy, stigma reduction, public mental health policy, and psychiatric epidemiology with a particular emphasis on mental illness stigma and time-trend analyses.
Education includes medical training at Universities of Freiburg and Hannover, a clinical internship at King’s College London, and postdoctoral qualifications from the University of Greifswald. He has held leadership roles such as Head of Community Psychiatry in Greifswald and Vice-chairman of the Department of Psychiatry there.
His research interests extend to the societal impact of mental health issues, including the consequences of high-profile events like the Germanwings plane crash on public stigma. He has contributed to over 175 peer-reviewed publications with a SCOPUS h-index of 30, focusing on stigma measurement, public attitudes, and mental health service accessibility.
Awards include the prestigious Ulrike-Fritze-Lindenthal Anti-Stigma Award (2020) and the DGPPN PhD Award (2020). He currently chairs the DGPPN Committee on Public Mental Health and leads the international NGO “Irrsinnig Menschlich e.V.” promoting mental health initiatives.
Editorial roles include serving on the boards of Stigma and Health, Psychiatrische Praxis, and the Scientific Advisory Board of Psychiatrie Verlag. His work integrates clinical practice, policy development, and community engagement to advance mental health equity.
