Professor Sir Geoffrey Nice KC served as Professor of Law at Gresham College from 2012 to 2016. He is a renowned barrister with over five decades of practice, specializing in international criminal law. His career includes leading the prosecution of Slobodan Milošević at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and advising on cases before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Sudan, Kenya, and Libya. He has also worked pro bono for victims’ groups in Iran, Burma, and North Korea. As a part-time judge since 1984, he has presided at the Old Bailey and other jurisdictions, and served as Vice-Chair of the Bar Standards Board (2009–2012). His research focuses on international criminal justice, human rights, and legal ethics.
Professor Nice has delivered numerous lectures on topics such as war crimes, human rights abuses, Brexit’s legal implications, and prison reform. He frequently comments on international law issues in media and contributes to NGOs advocating for justice and rights globally. His work bridges legal practice, academia, and activism, emphasizing accountability for state and non-state actors in conflict zones.
His lectures highlight interdisciplinary approaches, merging legal theory with real-world applications in conflict resolution, human rights advocacy, and institutional reform. Despite no formal academic grants listed, his contributions to legal education and public discourse are substantial through Gresham College and other platforms.
