University of SouthamptonAbout
Geoff Merrett is Professor of Electronic and Software Systems at the University of Southampton and serves as Deputy Head (Research) of the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). He is a member of the Cyber Physical Systems Research Group and was previously Head of the Centre for Internet of Things (IoT) and Pervasive Systems (2018-2024) and Co-Director of the Arm-ECS Research Centre (2020-2024).
His educational background includes a BEng (1st, Hons) and PhD in Electronic Engineering from Southampton (2004 and 2009 respectively), along with a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (2011). He was appointed as a Lecturer shortly after completing his PhD, promoted to Associate Professor in 2014, and Professor in 2019.
Professor Merrett's research focuses on energy management of mobile and embedded systems, self-powered computing, and the Internet of Things. His work bridges theoretical AI models with practical implementation on resource-constrained devices, particularly addressing energy efficiency challenges in computing systems. He has published over 250 papers with more than 5,000 citations, an h-index of 39, and a g-index of 64.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on dynamic neural networks, intermittent computing for energy-harvesting devices, and hardware acceleration for AI at the edge. His research consistently addresses the challenge of making computing systems more energy-efficient while maintaining performance, particularly for IoT applications and mobile/embedded environments.
- Vice Chancellor's Award for Public Engagement and Outreach (2019)
- IEEE R8 'Outstanding Counsellor' award (2013)
- VC Teaching Award (2011)
- Multiple Best Paper awards (IJCAI 2013, ICCES 2017, PECCS 2018, ISTM 2023)
Professor Merrett currently leads 8 PhD students and has previously graduated 30 PhD students. His research is supported by significant funding including a £1.4M EPSRC Platform Grant on Smart Cities (as Deputy Director), a £1.2M EPSRC International Centre for Spatial Computational Learning (as Southampton PI), and a £5.6M EPSRC PRiME Programme Grant (as Theme Leader). He has been involved in numerous EPSRC-funded projects totaling over £10 million in research funding.
He leads a research team focused on energy management and self-powered computing within the Centre for Internet of Things and Pervasive Systems, collaborating closely with industry partners including Arm through the Arm-ECS Research Centre. His team has developed innovative approaches to energy harvesting, intermittent computing, and efficient AI implementation for resource-constrained environments.
