Professor Gemma Modinos is a Professor of Neuroscience & Mental Health at King’s College London, based in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). She leads the Modinos Lab and co-chairs the ENIGMA Schizotypy working group. Her research focuses on multimodal neuroimaging to understand neural mechanisms underlying psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, particularly the role of emotional processing and glutamate/GABA pathways. She has pioneered studies on hippocampal circuit dysfunction and psychosis risk, integrating human and animal models.
- Education: BSc Psychology (Autonomous University of Barcelona), MSc Applied Neurosciences (University of Barcelona), PhD Neuroscience (University of Groningen, Cum Laude).
- Awards: NARSAD Young Investigator Award (2013), Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (2016), SIRS Rising Star Award (2019), Academia Europaea Fellowship (2024).
- Roles: Principal Investigator of Modinos Lab, Group Leader at MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
Research interests include clinical high-risk populations, neuroimaging biomarkers, and translational strategies targeting hippocampal-striatal circuits. Her work bridges basic neuroscience and clinical outcomes, with recent emphasis on benzodiazepine effects and childhood trauma impacts. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and led international collaborations like EU-GEI High Risk Study.
