Gemma Manning is a Senior Lecturer in the Law Department at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the School of Business, Education and Law and the Centre for Sustainability, Responsibility, Governance and Ethics. She formerly practiced as a solicitor in Immigration and Asylum Law and Mental Health Law. Her roles include module leader for Immigration and Asylum Law across multiple programs (LLB, Legal Practice Course, Master of Law and Practice, and LLB Distance Learning) and teaching on the Administration of Justice and Human Rights module. She manages the University Legal Advice Clinic, mentoring students in providing free legal services to the community.
Her research focuses on asylum, immigration, and human rights law, particularly issues related to immigration rules, policy, and the legal assessment of asylum claims involving Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) risks. She is pursuing a PhD investigating Immigration Tribunal practices in FGM-related asylum cases. Collaborative work includes responding to the Law Commission’s consultation on simplifying immigration rules, resulting in published analyses in Judicial Review and blogs.
Gemma’s publications include a 2019 Public Law article on the Minimum Income Requirement for family settlement and a regularly updated Westlaw entry on ECHR Article 8. She contributed to the Student Law Review and co-authored responses to the UK Administrative Justice Institute blog on immigration rule reforms.
