Dr Gemma Loomes is a Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the School of Social Sciences, Keele University, where she also serves as Senior Tutor, Employability and Careers Lead, and Alumni Liaison. She completed all her degrees at Keele University: a BA(Hons) in International Politics and Politics (2000), an M(Res) in Political Parties and Elections, and a PhD in 2008. Her doctoral thesis was published as a monograph by Routledge in 2011.
Her research focuses on Western European party systems, particularly strategic interactions between political parties and institutional frameworks. Key areas include electoral systems, anti-establishment party dynamics, and the Keele European Parties Research Unit (KEPRU) affiliations. She teaches modules on Comparative European Politics, the European Union, and electoral behavior at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Her publications span monographs and peer-reviewed articles analyzing UKIP strategies, electoral outcomes, and institutional engineering across Europe. Teaching responsibilities include coordinating dissertations and contributing to foundational modules like Modern Democracies and British Government and Politics.
