About
Gavin W. Britz serves as the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Houston Methodist, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Academic Institute, Director of the Center for Regenerative and Restorative Neurosurgery, and Co-director of the Neurological Institute. He leads the Britz Lab in collaboration with the Rice Neuroengineering Initiative to advance cerebrovascular and neurological research.
His educational background includes:
- MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand School of Medicine, South Africa (1987)
- Neurosurgical fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital
- Residency at University of Washington Medical School
- MPH from University of Washington (2003)
- MBA from George Washington University (2015)
Dr. Britz's research focuses on brain microcirculation pathophysiology in stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury. His lab pioneers neuromodulation and electroceutical approaches to activate innate neuroprotective mechanisms, investigates cerebrospinal fluid dynamics in vascular dementia, and explores stem cell therapies for neural repair. Key innovations target glymphatic system regulation and coagulation pathways in hemorrhagic recovery.
The Britz Lab team, including Dr. Eugene Golanov and Dr. Angelique Regnier-Golanov, conducts translational studies on cerebral blood flow regulation and memory impairment mechanisms following neurological trauma, aiming to develop clinical interventions for cerebrovascular disorders.
