Gavin Thomas

Gavin Thomas is Professor of Microbiology at the University of York, investigating bacterial membrane transport systems and host-microbe interactions. His work combines fundamental discovery with industrial applications.

Research examines bacterial nutrient uptake mechanisms, particularly TRAP transporters and sialic acid metabolism. Collaborations with Unilever investigate microbial contributions to body odor. Other projects focus on gut microbiome interactions and bacterial stress responses.

Recent publications characterize odor-producing enzymes and transporter dynamics, revealing new targets for antimicrobial strategies.

Leads the DETOX project developing bioinformatics tools for functional genomics. Serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Microbiology.
