Gavin Sutter is a Senior Lecturer in Media Law at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Law and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). He established Media Law at CCLS, introducing foundational modules in 2004 and currently teaches eight media-related courses across LLM and LLB programs in London, Paris, and online. He also contributes to the joint QMUL-BUPT program in Beijing, teaching legal basics and cybersecurity law to computer engineering students.
Education: LLB (Hons, 2:1) and LLM (Distinction in Computers and Law) from Queen’s University Belfast (1997–1998). Research focuses on media regulation, privacy, GDPR, and defamation law, with ongoing projects on 'privacy by design' and the Scottish Defamation Bill. He co-edits the second edition of Media Law & Regulation.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including modules on media law, cybersecurity, and digital rights. Public engagement includes leadership roles in BILETA and the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS), and international collaborations such as the CCLS Technology, Media & Telecommunications law Institute. He has advised on legal reforms, including testimony before the Scottish Parliament’s Justice Committee.
Supervises PhD candidates in areas like copyright, FinTech data protection, and video games’ human rights implications. Active in global academic networks, presenting at conferences in Europe, Asia, and North America.
