Dr Gavin Bowd is a Reader in French at the University of St Andrews' School of Modern Languages. He also holds an Extraordinary Associate Professorship at Stellenbosch University. His research focuses on transnational cultural exchanges between Scotland, Britain, Madagascar, and Romania with France, alongside studies in French colonial/post-colonial geographies, modern Romanian politics, communism/post-communism dynamics, geopoetics, and mining literature. He has authored/co-authored 124 publications including books on translation studies and historical analysis.
Education: MA (First Class Hons) and PhD in French from the University of St Andrews.
Recent research includes a collaborative project on Britain and Communist Romania (1948-1989), and a monograph on mining narratives. His work bridges historical analysis with literary critique, emphasizing cross-cultural dialogues. He has secured grants from the British Academy and Carnegie Trust for projects on topics ranging from Emmanuel de Martonne's Romanian engagements to interwar cultural networks.
