Gavan Ring

Lecturer in Voice at Munster Technological University (MTU) Cork School of Music within the Department of Pop, Jazz, Trad, Voice and Theatre Studies. Holds a Doctor of Music (DMus) from the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), where he was the first opera singer and youngest graduate to complete doctoral studies.

Educated at Schola Cantorum St Finian’s College Mullingar, Dublin City University (Music and Education), and the National Opera Studio London. Research focuses on Irish opera, operatic performance practice, and music in early childhood education, notably his groundbreaking doctoral work on Robert O’Dwyer’s Eithne which revived the 1909 Irish-language opera after 107 years.

Research output spans musicological publications in Studia Hibernica, Sound Post Magazine, and Early Times Magazine, with performance-based scholarship documented through commercial recordings. Performance career informs pedagogical approaches in vocal studies, emphasizing historical context and linguistic authenticity in operatic repertoire.

Artistic Director of Drogheda Classical Music and inaugural member of the Cara O’Sullivan Associate Artist Programme at Cork Opera House. Performance highlights include collaborations with London Symphony Orchestra (BBC Proms under Sir Simon Rattle), Munich Radio Symphony Orchestra, and leading roles at Glyndebourne, Irish National Opera, and La Monnaie. Discography features critically acclaimed recordings including Barry’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground (2021) and O’Dwyer’s Eithne (2018).
