Gary W. Lewis is a Lecturer in the Music Department at Humboldt State University (Cal Poly Humboldt). He holds a D.M.A. in flute performance and music history from the University of Oregon. Specializing in historical flutes, sound production, and instrument craftsmanship, he has trained under Robert Gilchrist in historical flute restoration. His teaching spans Humboldt State University, Oregon State University, and the National Conservatory of Panama.
His research interests focus on the evolution of flutes through studies of over 200 historic instruments from European and U.S. collections, informed by masters like Louis Lot and Verne Powell. As a performer, he has appeared with orchestras such as the Eugene Symphony and Oregon Baroque Ensemble, and collaborated with jazz legends Quincy Jones and Ella Fitzgerald.
