Gary Slater is a Humboldt Fellow and Researcher at the University of Münster’s Institut für Christliche Sozialwissenschaften (Faculty of Theology), where he leads the project 'Towards an Integrated Theological Ethics of Borders, Migration, and Environmental Degradation.' He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, an MTh from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA from the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the intersection of migration ethics, environmental degradation, and theological frameworks, particularly analyzing how borders symbolize human-nature divides.
Slater’s academic journey includes roles as a Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Edward’s University (2016–2019), Adjunct Professor at institutions like Huston-Tillotson University (2015–2016), and Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas (2012–2014). He is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, European Forum for the Study of Religion and the Environment, and the American Academy of Religion.
His research explores integral ecology, theological ethics, and the moral implications of migration. Notable publications include Our Common, Bordered Home: Laudato si' and the Promise of an Integrated Migration-Ecological Ethics (2023) and articles on sanctuary cities and environmental rhetoric.
