About
Dr. Gary Jacobs is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), affiliated with the Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design. His research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis for energy and environmental applications, with particular expertise in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, hydrogen production, CO2 conversion, and biofuel processing.
Dr. Jacobs' research spans over 25 years and addresses critical energy challenges including the conversion of syngas derived from natural gas, coal, and biomass to transportation fuels; hydrogen production and purification for fuel cells; and hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil pyrolysis products. His work integrates advanced characterization techniques including synchrotron radiation and isotopic tracers to elucidate reaction mechanisms. Notably, he has collaborated extensively with Honda Research Inc., SWRI, Argonne National Laboratory, and research institutions in Brazil.
His publication record includes 264 refereed publications, 188 presentations and non-refereed publications, and 4 US patents, with over 18,200 citations and an h-index of 75 as of January 2025. Recent work demonstrates his continued leadership in CO2 conversion technologies, catalyst design for selective reactions, and innovative approaches to hydrogen production. His research group at UTSA trains numerous graduate and undergraduate students who have received recognition for their work.
