Gary H. Bischof is a Professor and Unit Director in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University. He rejoined the faculty in 2019 after serving in administrative roles, including Dean of the Lee Honors College and Chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Purdue University, an M.S. from Virginia Tech, and a B.A. in Liberal Arts-Philosophy from Bethany College.
His research focuses on families of juvenile sex offenders, couple therapy, clinical supervision, integrating religion/spirituality in therapy, brief solution-oriented therapy, and LGBTQ+ couples. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles and 14 book chapters, and his work extends to international presentations.
Dr. Bischof is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Michigan, served on the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy (2012–16), and is active in leadership roles within the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). He has been recognized as a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor by AAMFT.
Outside academia, he enjoys outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and kayaking, and supports WMU athletics.
