Gary Bruce Ruvkun (born March 26, 1952) is an American molecular biologist currently serving as a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and conducting research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. His groundbreaking work in molecular biology has earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Ruvkun received his Bachelor of Arts in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and his PhD in biophysics from Harvard University in 1982. His doctoral research was conducted under Frederick M. Ausubel, focusing on bacterial nitrogen fixation genes. He completed postdoctoral research with Robert Horvitz at MIT and Walter Gilbert at Harvard.
Ruvkun's research has fundamentally transformed our understanding of gene regulation through microRNAs. His laboratory discovered the mechanism by which the first microRNA, lin-4, regulates translation of target mRNAs via imperfect base-pairing, and identified the second microRNA, let-7, demonstrating its conservation across animal phylogeny including humans. His work revealed an entirely new world of RNA regulation at an unprecedented small size scale. Additionally, Ruvkun's laboratory discovered key features of insulin-like signaling pathways that control aging and metabolism in C. elegans, with homologues now implicated in human aging and diabetes.
His publication record spans over decades, with major contributions in microRNA biology, gene regulation, aging mechanisms, and more recently, astrobiology through the SETG (Search for Extraterrestrial Genomes) project. His articles show a progression from fundamental molecular mechanisms to broader applications in medicine and even space exploration.

The SETG project, developed in collaboration with Maria Zuber at MIT, Chris Carr, and Michael Finney, aims to develop instruments that can amplify and sequence DNA and RNA to search for life on other planets that might be ancestrally related to Earth's Tree of Life.
