About
Dr. Garry Steil is a Professor of Critical Care Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, where his research focuses on blood glucose monitoring and control systems with particular expertise in artificial pancreas development and diabetes management in critical care settings and for individuals with diabetes.
Dr. Steil's research program seeks to combine continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technologies with insulin dosing strategies derived from understanding of how the beta-cell controls blood glucose. His initial research targeted developing an artificial pancreas for individuals with type 1 diabetes, with current focus on younger children, and has expanded to improve glucose control in intensive care units.
His research interests include:
- Blood glucose monitoring systems
- Artificial pancreas development for type 1 diabetes
- Optimizing insulin dosing strategies
- Glycemic control in critical care settings
- Impact of diet on glucose management in diabetes
- Continuous glucose monitoring applications in pediatrics and neonatology
Dr. Steil's publication record demonstrates a strong focus on translating research into clinical practice, with particular attention to pediatric applications, dietary impacts on glucose control, and the development of decision support systems. His work bridges engineering principles with clinical medicine to address challenges in diabetes care and critical care medicine.
His educational background combines engineering and physiology, with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Southern California. Prior to his current position, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Joslin Diabetes Center and in industry developing artificial pancreas technology.
