About
Gareth Weedall is a Lecturer in Genetics at the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology, Liverpool John Moores University (since 2018). He previously held a Postdoctoral Researcher position at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's Vector Biology Department (2014–2018). He earned a BSc in Genetics from the University of Nottingham (1999–2002) and a PhD in Pathogen Molecular Biology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2003–2007).
His research focuses on parasite genomics, evolutionary genetics of infectious diseases, and mechanisms of resistance in malaria vectors. Key areas include genomic analysis of metabolic resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes, genetic diversity in Entamoeba parasites, and balancing selection in Plasmodium antigens. Weedall has contributed to identifying genomic footprints of insecticide resistance and developing molecular tools for studying malaria vectors.
His publications span topics such as parasite genomics, vector biology, and evolutionary mechanisms. Notable works include studies on Entamoeba histolytica virulence factors, genomic tools for Anopheles funestus, and the role of X-chromosome divergence in mosquito speciation. His research bridges molecular biology, computational genomics, and evolutionary theory to address challenges in parasitic disease transmission and control.
