About
Dr. Gareth Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Earth Sciences at Imperial College London, part of the Faculty of Engineering's Department of Earth Science and Engineering. He holds visiting associate status at the California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on understanding Earth's dynamics from mantle processes to surface environments, integrating field data, computational techniques, and theoretical models. Roberts earned his PhD in Geophysics from the University of Cambridge (2006–2010) and BSc in Geology from Durham University (2003–2006).
His work spans geology, geophysics, and environmental science, with emphasis on mantle dynamics, landscape evolution, and numerical modeling. Notable contributions include studies on mantle circulation models, stochastic landscape evolution, and geochemical mapping. Roberts has authored/co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and serves on editorial boards for geoscience journals. He leads a research team exploring interdisciplinary approaches to Earth systems, collaborating with academic and industrial partners globally.
Awards include the EAGE best paper award for his analysis of unconformities in Southwest Britain. Roberts teaches advanced earth science courses and has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. His current projects investigate dynamic topography, sediment routing systems, and the impact of mantle processes on surface environments, supported by grants from UK Research and Innovation and the Natural Environment Research Council.
