About
Dr. Gareth Jones is a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester with expertise in industrial modeling. He holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford and completed postdoctoral research at Oxford (2006-2009), Harvard University (2010-2012), and the National University of Singapore (2012-2014) before joining Manchester in 2014.
His research focuses on continuum elasticity in thin structures (plates/shells), electronic properties of 2D materials like graphene, and mathematical modeling of biological systems. Current investigations include:
- Strain coupling in nanoscale materials
- Mechanics of cellular growth networks
- Buckling phenomena in embedded structures
- Industrial applications of elastic systems
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on mechanical instabilities across scales, from cellular morphodynamics to industrial materials. Recent work shows increased emphasis on biological applications, particularly in cell division mechanics and tissue topology.
Dr. Jones leads research in three interconnected areas:
- Continuum Mechanics
- Mathematics in Life Sciences
- Mathematics of Waves and Materials
