Dr. Gareth Doherty is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Senior Research Associate at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). His work focuses on human-centered design, ethnographic fieldwork, and participatory methodologies to address equity, cultural identity, and climate change impacts. He is affiliated with the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture and the Critical Landscapes Design Lab.
Education: PhD (Doctor of Design) from Harvard GSD; MLA and Urban Design Certificate from the University of Pennsylvania; Master's and undergraduate degrees from University College Dublin.
Research Interests: Postcolonial and Islamic landscapes, African urbanism, landscape fieldwork methodologies, and the intersection of design with social and environmental justice. Notable projects include ethnographic studies in Bahrain, Brazil, the Caribbean, and Africa, emphasizing under-documented narratives.
Publications: Key works include Paradoxes of Green: Landscapes of a City-State (2017), Landscape Fieldwork (2025), and edited volumes like Ecological Urbanism (2010). His research bridges theory and practice, advocating for culturally sensitive design pedagogy.
