Gao

Dr. Gao directs the Flow Imaging and Renewable Energy (FIRE) Lab at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Colorado Denver, where he joined as an Assistant Professor in August 2022. He actively mentors students through programs like EURēCA! and focuses on experimental fluid dynamics and renewable energy systems.

• Research Interests: Advanced flow diagnostics, thermal fluid systems, wind turbine icing physics, anti-/de-icing technology, and extreme weather impacts on renewable energy infrastructure.
• Scientific Awards: NSF CAREER Award (2024), Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award (2024), Early Career Award for Excellence in Research (2025), and multiple internal CU Denver grants (OER, Teaching Innovation, CFDA, ORS).
• Editorial Roles: Associate Editor for IET Renewable Power Generation, Editorial Board member for Scientific Reports, and Youth Editor for Carbon Neutrality.
• Publications: Co-author of the book Wind Turbine Icing Physics and Anti-/De-Icing Technology (Elsevier, 2022).
• Lab Activities: Welcomes new PhD and postdoc researchers (2026 openings), trains students in climate change mitigation via course MECH 4228/5228, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams on renewable energy innovation.
