About
Gang Chen is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) since 2019. He previously held academic positions at Cornell University (2009-2016) as Assistant/Associate Professor and conducted postdoctoral research at MIT (2007-2009).
Research Focus: Fundamental dynamics of atmospheric circulation and chemical transport, including tropical Hadley cells, extratropical storm systems, stratosphere-troposphere exchange of ozone, and climate drivers of regional weather extremes. Key projects examine Eurasia-North America warming asymmetry, Rossby wave trains, and moist energy constraints on temperature variance.
Publications (2025 highlights) demonstrate expertise in:
- Climate warming asymmetry mechanisms
- Atmospheric circulation time scales
- Coal phase-out environmental impacts
- Stratospheric wave dynamics
- Moist static energy modeling
Group Composition includes active researchers like postdoc Kezhou Lu, graduate student Bowen Ge, and former members transitioning to institutions such as Harvard University, Princeton/GFDL, and Colorado State University.
Funding: Currently supported by NSF grant AGS-2232581 and NASA grant 80NSSC21K1522. Collaborations span NCAR, CESM2 simulations, and international climate model comparisons.
