About
Gail Ramsay is Professor of Arabic at Uppsala University's Department of Linguistics and Philology within the Faculty of Languages. She has been teaching Arabic language and literature at Uppsala since 1997, receiving tenure as a university lecturer in 1998. Her scholarly work bridges literary analysis, media studies, and environmental humanities, with particular focus on Arabic literature across the Middle East and North Africa regions.
Ramsay earned her Ph.D. in Arabic from Stockholm University following doctoral studies at both the University of Michigan (1990-91) and Stockholm University (1991-96). Her academic journey reflects deep engagement with Arabic language and literature across multiple institutional contexts in Sweden and internationally.
Professor Ramsay's research spans several interconnected areas with evolving focus. Beginning with romantic writing and social criticism in modern Arabic literature, she has published extensively on globalization and cross-cultural writing in the Gulf region. Her work analyzing Al-Jazeera's debate program 'al-Ittijāh al-muʿākis' established her media studies expertise. More recently, she has pioneered research on the Arabic blogosphere, particularly in Egypt, and developed a significant focus on ecology and environmental concerns in Arabic literature, contributing to environmental humanities in Middle Eastern contexts.
Ramsay's scholarly output demonstrates clear thematic progression from traditional literary analysis toward digital media and ecological perspectives. Her early work examined Gulf literature and women writers, while her mid-career research engaged with media discourse and blogging. The most recent publications reveal sophisticated integration of environmental concerns with literary analysis, establishing her as a leading scholar in Arabic ecocriticism.
Throughout her career, Professor Ramsay has secured significant research funding, including projects with the Swedish Research Council. She has collaborated with media professor Kristina Riegert on the Arabic blogosphere project (2010-2012) and is planning new research with Arabic professor Tetz Rooke on 'Arabic Literary Imaginaries in Environmental Humanities.' She has also represented Swedish institutions internationally, including serving as responsible for the Middle East Program at the Swedish Institute of Foreign Affairs in 2009.
