Gabriel Farrugia is a Researcher in the Department of History at the European University Institute (EUI), where he is part of the Working Group on Methods in Early Modern History. He joined the institution in 2022 as part of Cohort 2022.
His research focuses on the History of emotions within Early modern history, with specific attention to Mediterranean contexts. His work examines emotional encounters experienced by seventeenth-century travelers, exploring how emotions shaped historical experiences and cultural exchanges during this period.
Farrugia is currently completing his thesis titled Emotional Encounters and the Early Seventeenth-Century Traveller under the supervision of Professor Giancarlo Casale, Head of the Department of History, with Benno Bastian Gammerl serving as second reader.
As a Maltese national, Farrugia brings a Mediterranean perspective to his research within the international academic environment of the EUI.
