Gabor Wiese

Gabor Wiese is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of Luxembourg. He leads the 'Discovering Structures in Numbers' research group and holds key academic leadership roles, including Director of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Applications, Study Programme Director for the Master in Mathematics, and Deputy Study Programme Director for the Master in Secondary Education – Mathematics.

His research focuses on Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry, employing algebraic, explicit, and computational methods—often inspired by the mathematics behind Fermat’s Last Theorem. He has recently extended his work into cryptography. His approach emphasizes computational tools and experimental mathematics, reflected in his leadership of the Experimental Mathematics Lab, which he co-founded to provide early research opportunities for undergraduate students.

He has been awarded multiple grants from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), including INTER grants and the first FNR PRIDE grant in mathematics, which he coordinated. His contributions to education include initiating the annual Mathematical Careers Days and co-developing the first mathematics workshops for the Scienteens Lab.

Advising and Grants: Gabor Wiese has successfully supervised 8 PhD candidates and is actively involved in PhD training and research funding. He has led collaborative projects with the German DFG and French ANR, and participated in numerous FNR-funded initiatives.

Labs and Teams: He is the founding and current leader of the Experimental Mathematics Lab and heads the 'Discovering Structures in Numbers' research group, fostering interdisciplinary and student-involved research.
