Gabe Schwartzman

Gabe Schwartzman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Geography at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research focuses on political ecology, climate politics, and rural economic transitions, particularly examining the social implications of decarbonization and environmental policy. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

His current research includes studies on the decline of the coal industry in Central Appalachia and the dynamics of sustainable use protected areas in the Brazilian Amazon's Terra do Meio region. He explores topics such as forest carbon offset regimes, peasant livelihoods, and deforestation linked to climate politics. His work contributes to debates in development studies and the intersections of race, gender, and environmental governance.
